“Each record I make is more of an amalgamation of who I am,” says John Grant. “The more I do this, the more I trust myself, and the closer I get to making what I imagine in my head.”

Even when the Michigan-born man released his debut solo album Queen Of Denmark in 2010, Grant laced sumptuous soft-rock ballads with an array of spacey, wistful synthesizer sounds, increasingly adding taut, fizzing sequencers, nu-synth-disco settings and icy soundscapes to the mix on 2013’s Pale Green Ghosts and 2015’s Grey Tickles, Black Pressure, the latter The Guardian described as, “variously agonising, hilarious, uplifting and moving: another bravura display from a unique songwriting talent.”

Now, with his fourth solo album Love Is Magic, Grant continues to evolve, creating his most electronic record yet, in collaboration with Benge (Ben Edwards), analogue synth expert/collector and a member of electronic trio Wrangler, Grant’s collaborators earlier this year under the collective name of Creep Show on the album Mr Dynamite.

Produced by Grant (together with Benge and Paul Alexander), and engineered by Benge at his Cornish studio, the diamond-hard, diamond-gleaming Love Is Magic, “is closer still to how I’ve always wanted my records to sound, but I didn’t know how to go about it,” Grant says. Already mentioned above, he also called on bassist Paul Alexander of Denton, Texas maestros Midlake, renewing a working relationship that began on Queen Of Denmark. “Paul trained in music theory at UNT in Denton, Texas with an emphasis in Jazz and I knew he would come up with beautiful harmonies, so I unleashed him on the backing vocals,” Grant enthuses. “He comes up with interesting angles rather than the obvious and also plays some of the best bass lines I’ve ever heard.”

Besides the quest for sound, “the lyrics, of course, continue to be very important to me,” says John. “They’re just snapshots of everyday life where myriad moods and every sort of horrible and hilarious occurrence one can imagine mix with the pedestrian resulting in the absurdity and beauty of life.”

Anyone familiar with Grant’s story will recognise his battles - with addiction and health, with trusting love and relationships. From this turbulence he’s forged another riveting collection of often brutal diatribes and confessionals, where humour, fear, anxiety and anger overlap as Grant, with trademark candour, figuratively exposes the machinations of his saturated brain. It’s epitomised by the album’s brilliant opener ‘Metamorphosis’, almost as if his warring psyches are facing up to one another, as impervious synth-pop and brain-on-fire imagery (“Tiki bar, rat soufflé, Buik regal, Marvin Gaye”) melts into dream-ballad introspection (“Questions left unanswered, spiritual extortion”) and back to synth-backed mania.

THE NO’S: No cameras, no recording devices, no outside food or beverage, pets, weapons, drugs, alcohol, or illegal substances. No stage diving, No crowd surfing. No refunds.

With 5 consecutive Beatport number 1s, over six million streams in the last 12 months off the back of their lively social media interaction, and collaborations and remixes for Zomboy, Datsik, SKisM, Excision, Destroid, Astronaut, Getter and more under their belt, few can deny that Barely Alive are one of the most exciting and fastest growing bass music acts to emerge over the last year.

The duo originating from Massachusetts, USA initially made a name for themselves when they released their debut EP through Disciple Recordings in early 2014 to global acclaim, hitting the number one spot across 4 different genre charts on Beatport in just 24 hours. This made Barely Alive an over night success, and to this date they have been labelled just under Skrillex as the second hottest dubstep artists of 2014 on Beatport.

International touring soon followed across the United States, Europe and the rest of the world, with Barely Alive making up one of the core artists of the Disciple Alliance tours, the Datsik Ninja Nation tour along side Trolley Snatcha and Kennedy Jones, and multiple headline tours in Australia, New Zealand, France and more.

Barely Alive have received regular DJ support from acts such as Skrillex, Datsik, Excision, Far Too Loud and Zomboy, as well as making regular appearances on huge online music platforms such as UKF, EDM.com, NEST HQ, This Song Is Sick, and a guest mix for the renowned BBC Radio 1.

The second installment in The Days of Bowie Series will be "HUNGERHIVE", where weekly goth dance night HIVE will echo the menace and the magic of the opening scene of the film The Hunger. The Star Theater will evoke the underground NYC discotheque where vampires, played by Catherine Deneuve and David Bowie, hunted their prey. To begin the night, This-A-Way Records has curated an amazing line-up for a live show that includes Murderbait, Vibrissae, and Leading Psychics, all paying homage to David Bowie. The show starts promptly at 9:30PM.

Of course, Hive is first and foremost a dance night, and starting at 11PM DJs Aurora, Gregarious, and Apocalypse will keep the dance floor going for the rest of the evening with plenty of Bowie's darkest dance hits, along with songs that are Bowie influenced and adjacent.

Dress in your black Sunday's best, and beware the slice of the ankh.

One of Los Angeles punk rock's most widely admired yet little-heard bands makes a striking return to records on January 18, 2019, as Yep Roc Records issues an all-new collection by The Flesh Eaters, I Used to Be Pretty.

On the release, founding vocalist and songwriter Chris Desjardins -- better known as Chris D. -- is backed by the legendary "all-star" edition of the band, originally heard on the 1981 set A Minute to Pray, A Second to Die: Dave Alvin (guitar) and Bill Bateman (drums) of The Blasters; John Doe (bass) and D.J. Bonebrake(marimba and percussion) of X; and Steve Berlin(saxophones) of The Plugz (and later The Blasters andLos Lobos). The album was produced collectively by the band members.

On five of the album's 11 tracks, this superpowered unit is joined by Julie Christensen, Desjardins' vocal partner in both The Flesh Eaters' successor band Divine Horsemen and latter-day editions of the original group. The singers were married during the '80s.

Release of I Used to Be Pretty, which will be issued in single-CD and double-LP configurations, will be followed by a series of U.S. tour dates -- the very first shows, save for a lone U.K. appearance, to take this hitherto elusive group outside the West Coast.

The Flesh Eaters were among the groundbreaking bands that emerged from the original Hollywood punk club The Masque in 1977. Chris D. -- poet, novelist, actor, screenwriter, director, and film programmer -- developed a stormy, lyrically intense style that drew on such varied sources as symbolist poetry, violent American pulp novels, and films running the gamut from classic European cinema to samurai, horror, spaghetti Western, and noir genre movies. He was also active on the local scene as a writer for the L.A. punkzine Slash and an A&R man and producer for the magazine's offshoot record label.

The band's first records employed various ad hoc assemblies of local punk musicians. For its second album, the howling, swampy, hoodoo-infused A Minute to Pray, A Second to Die -- produced by Chris D. and released on Slash's subsidiary imprint Ruby Records -- the singer recruited a band then unrivaled for musical firepower. The potent lineup played only a handful of unforgettable local shows before its members' commitments to their own bands sundered the group.

However, the Minute to Pray Flesh Eaters' reputation abided for decades, and in 2006 the lineup reunited for an appearance at the All Tomorrow's Parties festival in the U.K. and a few West Coast appearances. Two more brief regroupings followed in 2015 and 2018.
